Course Description and Overall Objectives

This is the introductory course in management. The course is designed to provide students with an overview of the management functions and its role in organizations and society. The course aims to provide students with the basic managerial knowledge necessary for Business students. The course focuses on providing students with analytical, developmental, managerial and technical skills that relate to managerial positions in organizations. This course is an introduction to the critical management skills involved in planning, organizing, controlling, leading and decision making in an organization. It provides a framework for understanding issues involved in both managing and being managed, and it will help you to be a more effective contributor to organizations that you join. This course develops a “systems” view of organizations that examine organizations as part of a context, including but not limited to environment, strategy, structure, tasks, people and outputs.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
A. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge in this management course.
B. Gain practical skills and personal attributes and competencies that are required for managerial position.
C. Describe the four management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
D. Outline the historical evolution of management theories.
E. Explain how decisions are made within an organization and how those decisions are communicated to the various stakeholders.
F. Relate the basic concepts of planning: the importance of planning, strategic planning, and the types of objectives and plans developed by organizations.
G. Describe the various concepts of Human Resource Management and its phases.
H. Describe the concept of production and product life cycle.
I. Understand the quality management concepts and get a thorough understanding of various quality metrices.


Course Syllabi

Module I: Definition of Management – the evolution of management principles – styles of Management – levels in management-structured and unstructured decision making – functions of management. Organizational behavior – motivational theories

Module II: Production & Marketing Management: Time management–workflow design – scheduling CP/M – critical path – PERT, Problems, Types of Markets – Marketing Mix – Product life cycle – pricing strategies – advertisement-sales promotion

Module III: Quality Management. Concept of quality, total quality management, 7 sigma principles, ISO certifications, Component maturity models, CMM Levels.

Module IV: Human Resource Management: Meaning of HRM, Recruitment- selection and training – the difference between training and development – on the job and off the job training.

Bruce Mathew, an academician for the past 18 years is one of the earliest free software activist in the state of Kerala having a vast expertise in the area of Learning Management Systems, Information Systems, Data Mining, Geospatial Mapping and Learning Analytics. After completing his Postgraduate studies in Computer Science and the MPhil Programme, he secured the DST fellowship for research on Outcome based Education using LMS Competencies. This fellowship was later converted to his Doctoral studies at NITTTR, Chennai with domain specialisation on OBE based Instruction, Delivery and assessment. He is a national trainer on MOODLE LMS and a consultant to various educational Institutions for OBE based Instructional Delivery and Curriculum Mapping. Besides academics, he is an active spatial mapping expert in GIS and a youtuber. He teaches Data Mining, Operating Systems, Knowledge Management, Software Engineering, Bigdata and EDM. He has a total of 12 research papers to his credit including a paper in IEEE and 3 other papers in Scopus Indexed Journals. During his short career, He has secured various sponsorships from DST, AICTE, UGC and IITs for his research and co-curricular activities.
